Data You Give Us Directly
Search Queries
A name or location entered into a search tool is sent directly to the outside provider that operates that feature. The provider processes the query and supplies its results. Charlotte County Criminal History does not retain or record those search terms on its own systems.
Messages and Contact Submissions
When you email us, we retain the message as needed to respond. It remains within our organization unless disclosure is required by a valid legal obligation.
Data We Gather Automatically
Our servers automatically receive basic technical and usage details when a page loads, including:
- The date and time of each page request
- Your device's assigned IP address
- The referring site, when one is reported
- Browser type and version
- Operating system and device category
- Pages viewed and the length of those visits
Cookies and Analytics
Cookies are small files placed on a device. We use them with analytics services to understand traffic in aggregate, such as which pages are used most and where visits end. You may block cookies through your browser settings, although doing so can change how some site features work.
What We Do With This Data
- Routing a search request to the selected partner service
- Maintaining site availability and page performance
- Finding and resolving technical faults
- Measuring which pages are useful and which need improvement
- Presenting advertising that may reflect visitor interests
No Criminal-Record Data on File
Charlotte County Criminal History does not keep, assemble, or sell a database of personal criminal records. The site provides general directions to the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office, the local court clerks, Virginia State Police CJIS and CCRE, and the Virginia Sex Offender and Crimes Against Minors Registry. We are not a consumer reporting agency under the Fair Credit Reporting Act. Visitor information is not used to create consumer reports or profiles about other people.
Third-Party Search Partners
Independent companies operate the search boxes displayed on this website. A query submitted through one of those tools is governed by that provider's privacy policy rather than this policy. We do not control a partner's retention, processing, or disclosure rules, so review its terms before entering a search.
Links to Other Websites
Links may lead to Charlotte County offices, Virginia court systems, state agencies, legal-aid resources, or outside search services. Once you follow an external link, that site's own privacy terms apply. Review them before providing personal information.
Some advertising providers may measure activity across websites to select targeted ads. Their systems, not ours, conduct that tracking.
Who Might See Your Data
We do not sell personal information. Data may be disclosed to the following limited categories:
- Analytics providers that measure traffic and site performance
- Search providers that process queries submitted through their tools
- Advertising networks that serve ads on the site
- Government or law-enforcement bodies when disclosure is compelled by valid legal process
How We Protect Your Data
We use customary safeguards for the information we collect. No internet-connected system can be guaranteed completely secure, however, so we cannot promise that unauthorized access or a breach will never occur.
Users Under 18
The website is intended for adults, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone younger than 18. If we learn that a minor supplied such information, we will remove it.
Your Data Rights
Applicable privacy and consumer-protection law may provide rights concerning personal data. In Virginia, the Virginia Freedom of Information Act, Va. Code § 2.2-3700 et seq., governs access to public records held by covered government bodies, while Va. Code § 19.2-389 limits dissemination of Central Criminal Records Exchange information. Those statutes do not turn this private site into a government records custodian. Subject to the law that applies, you may:
- Request access to personal information we hold about you
- Ask that inaccurate personal information be corrected
- Seek deletion when the applicable law provides that right
- Opt out of processing when an applicable right permits it
Updates to This Policy
We may revise this policy. Any revision will be posted on this page with an updated effective date, and the posted version will govern future use.
Effective date: August 10, 2026
